The USS Hartford docked at Mina Salman pier has apparently been surrounded with protective booms as local Public Commission for the Protection of Fisheries, Environment and Wildlife Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa issued orders for the officials concerned to follow up on the environmental impact the incident may have on Bahrain. It was first thought that this piece of information concerned the 25,000 of Light Crude/Diesel that the USS New Orleans spilled when a 16-18 diamter hole was punched into its hull...it now turns out there could be far more worrisome issues.
It seems that Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa wants WATER SAMPLES from under the Nuclear Fast Attack Sub USS Hartford to ascertain the severity of the RADIOACTIVE LEAK!
He said that officials are monitoring the situation with the US Navy regional environment affairs co-ordinator and Mutual Emergency (MEMAC) and Bahrain port authorities after the vessels were transferred to Bahrain waters for maintenance work.
"We ensured containing the environmental impact from the oil leaks with the use of rubber booms," said the spokesman.
He said that the public commission requested the US Navy to be provided with samples from under the submarine to be analysed as soon as possible at one of the neutral labs in the region.
"The move aimed at establishing the level of the radioactive leak," said the spokesman.
He said that Bahrain authorities also requested an urgent report on procedures that ensure safeguarding marine environment and the health of the workers during maintenance work on the submarine in Bahrain.
"The public commission, in co-ordination with the Royal Navy, learnt that the submarine's fuel was not affected from the collision," said the spokesman.
"The US Navy regional environment affairs co-ordinator also assured us in an urgent reply that the submarine contains measuring and early dedication equipment to monitor any leak of nuclear fuel." The USS Hartford hit the USS New Orleans with SUCH FORCE that it almost sheared off its own sail, ripping it along the entire length of its seam, and doing significant damage to the plane. The USS Hartford was under water at the time of the collision with the New Orleans...this was NO BUMP...what makes me believe this? The sixteen foot diameter hole in the Hull of the USS New Orleans. Let me repeat that...the SIXTEEN FOOT HOLE IN THE HULL OF THE SHIP. The sub rolled itself at least 85 degrees before freeing itself, and the USS New Orleans had to be saved from capsizing, suffering INTERNAL SHIP DAMAGE. This explains the injuries suffered by ten percent of the Hartford's crew. Where are some first hand accounts of this crash? I mean lets be real, a car chase brings out six heliocopters and four FOX News crews....this should still be breaking news at six PM.
As this message is being written, over two dozen special team members have been flown over to make EMERGENCY in theatre repairs as the US NAVY hopes to repair the two vessels enough to LIMP THEM HOME under their own power....especially since it seems impossible right now to get the Nuclear Sub back home to America except under its own power...which raises another question....what if I am right in my belief that there has been damage done to the NUCLEAR PROPULSION SYSTEM? The U.S. Navy submarine and U.S. amphibious ship that collided in the Strait of Hormuz March 20, have been undergoing extensive engineering and damage assessments since pulling into Bahrain March 21.
Engineering and technical experts arrived in Bahrain to assess the damage to USS Hartford (SSN 768) and USS New Orleans (LPD 18). They will augment Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC) Detachment Bahrain. These are not just Engineering and technical experts, but the BEST AMERICA HAS...they are there trying to save a submarine, and the USS New Orleans.
Twelve Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard (PHNSY) personnel and two Naval Sea Systems (NAVSEA) experts are assessing the damage to Hartford and New Orleans and have begun initial in-theater repairs.
While overall damage to both ships is being evaluated, investigators believe Hartford rolled approximately 85 degrees during the collision. That is one MOTHERING FUCKING HIT for a NUCLEAR SUB...there is STRUCTURAL DAMAGE that has to have had an affect on the nuclear propulsion drive.
Despite the roll, engineering investigations have confirmed the propulsion plant of the submarine was unaffected by this collision. As if they would admit any different? The sub drive through A SHIPS HULL, punched a 16 foot diameter hole in it, but EVERYTHING IS FINE? However, Hartford sustained damage to its sail and periscope, as well as the port bow plane.
New Orleans suffered a ruptured fuel tank. Divers have determined the resulting hole is approximately 16 by 18 feet in size. There was also interior damage to two ballast tanks.
In addition to the engineering efforts, two formal investigations are currently underway: a Safety Investigation and a Judge Advocate General Manual (JAGMAN) Investigation. So why was my formally filed citizen complain to the Naval Inspector General Dismissed...everything I alleged is being born out TO BE TRUE, including the lying and coverup. Capt. Craig Kleint, the Dock Landing Ship (LSD) Class Squadron commodore has been appointed as the investigating officer (IO) for the JAGMAN investigation. A senior O-6 submarine officer has been named as the senior member of the Safety Instigation Review, but his name is not releasable until the investigation has been completed.
The Safety Investigation Board is appointed to identify hazards and their causal factors in serious incidents. Their report is an essential tool to identify causes to prevent recurrence.
The JAGMAN investigation is intended to provide a critical and objective overview of what, happened. Kleint, a nuclear-trained surface warfare officer, is joined by a post-command submarine officer. They are supported by a three-person legal team.
Naval Surface Forces (SURFOR) and Naval Submarine Forces (SUBFOR) are providing extensive support to Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT) for the Safety Investigation Board and JAGMAN investigation team.
Both investigations have a 30-day initial timeline, but extensions may be granted if more time is needed to complete the investigation process. SURE, BUY TIME, THEN QUIETLY RELEASE THE REPORT LATE ON A FRIDAY.
Hartford and New Orleans were on regularly scheduled deployments to the U.S. 5th Fleet Area of Operations conducting maritime security operations (MSO) when the accident occurred.

Since the invasion of Iraq, have done a good job of supporting our troops even if I did not support the war, or Bush's decision to fight it...I am reaching a point where I am no longer sure I can continue to SUPPORT our troops. Re-enlistment according to news reports is up, which means these soldiers are now willingly doing three, four, even five tours (this excludes those who through stop gap are being forced against their will to serve). Worse, many of them are encouraging young men and women to enlist...that is an unforgivable sin.

Obama Town Hall Questioners Were Campaign Backers
Updated 7:02 p.m. By Garance Franke-Ruta President Obama has promised to change the way the government does business, but in at least one respect he is taking a page from the Bush playbook, stocking his town hall Thursday with supporters whose soft -- though far from planted -- questions provided openings to discuss his preferred message of the day.
Obama has said, "I think it's important to engage your critics ... because not only will you occasionally change their mind but, more importantly, sometimes they will change your mind," White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs recounted to The Post's Lois Romano in an interview Wednesday.
But while the online question portion of the White House town hall was open to any member of the public with an Internet connection, the five fully identified questioners called on randomly by the president in the East Room were anything but a diverse lot. They included: a member of the pro-Obama Service Employees International Union, a member of the Democratic National Committee who campaigned for Obama among Hispanics during the primary; a former Democratic candidate for Virginia state delegate who endorsed Obama last fall in an op-ed in the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star; and a Virginia businessman who was a donor to Obama's campaign in 2008.
Here are their stories:
1. Sergio Salmeron: Self-description at the White House: "My name is Sergio Salmeron. I want to find out about health care."
Salmeron became engaged with the Obama campaign early in 2008, writing on his blog at my.barackobama.com, "We need to mobilize towards changing the trend of '2 to 1 Latinos favoring Hillary over Barack.' Let's make a resolute commitment... Let's put the facts on the table, ask the questions, until we understand how this all applies to us. Then strategize [sic] to get the word out to Latinos in America, who want change as much as everyone else."
He was a volunteer canvasser for the campaign, he told The Post, and did voter registration work and translated materials for the campaign, as well. A partner at Global Paradigm Strategies, Salmeron is volunteer "member of the Democratic National Committee" and continues to be active with the Obama campaign's successor, Organizing for America, which is how he got the White House invite, he said.
"I got a call from this woman who has been working with me for the pledge drive," he said, referring to the Organizing for America drive on behalf of the president's budget proposal. "You know, we're trying to get support out for the president's agenda."
2. Tom Sawner: Self-description: "Sir, I'm Tom Sawner. I'm a service-disabled veteran, small-business owner in Arlington, Virginia. My company, Educational Options, works with public schools."
According to Federal Election Commission records, Sawner made a $250 donation to Obama's campaign on Oct. 27, 2008. He also, as he noted Thursday, served as an adviser on Obama's educational platform committee. He said he was invited to the White House town hall through the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Small Business Executive Council.
Sawner's no stranger to the White House, either; he attended President Bush's Feb. 2008 signing ceremony for that year's economic stimulus package -- another Chamber of Commerce invite. And in April 2008, he even became an anecdote in one of Bush's speeches.
"And I met a guy named Tom Sawner," the 43rd president said at a small business summit. "Now, he's an old fighter pilot, which means there's no wall he can [sic] run through. He's a doer, an achiever, and he's got him a small business called Educational Options."
But the event with Obama, Sawner said, "was a whole different look and feel" than the one with Bush. "This is a president who is into openness." And he didn't know he was going to be able to ask a question until he got to the forum, he said.
3. Carlos Del Toro: Self-description: "My name is Carlos Del Toro. I served in the Navy for 26 years, retired four years ago, and started a small business."
"As a Virginia small-business owner, veteran, and Latino, I'm voting for Sen. Barack Obama for the same reasons as millions of other Americans: because I believe this country desperately needs change. Obama will change our economic policies to help middle-class families, promote the growth of small businesses, and increase funding for veterans' affairs, so no member of our armed services goes without the medical treatment he or she needs and deserves," he wrote.
In 2008, he donated $2,750 to Virginia Democratic candidates for office, according to the Center for Responsive Politics; in 2006, he gave $1000 to the campaign of now Sen. Jim Webb (Va.), FEC records show.
He also has ties to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Small Business Council.
4. Linda Bock: "My name is Linda Bock and I'm a registered nurse just in Prince George's County, Maryland -- been there 34 years at a free senior health center. And I'm here with my fellow nurses from SEIU."
Bock, along with her chapter of the SEIU and her son and daughter, helped campaign and canvass for Obama, she said. After Obama was elected, she wrote in the Landover, Md., 1199 SEIU nurses' newsletter: "Now we have our work cut out for us -to hold our elected officials accountable. And I hope they hold us accountable too. We all have work to do to make the changes needed to restore our reputation, to heal the wounds of war, to repair our earth and regulate its resources; and, to secure our economic future. It will take sacrifice and service. It will take prayer and the grace of God. Now we have hope. We have President-elect Barack Obama. God bless America."
Her invite to the White House came through the Nurse Alliance Leadership Council, she said. And like Sawner, she didn't know until she got to the forum that it was open to the in real life participants. "I did not think we would be able to ask any questions," she said. "I wasn't personally anticipating being chosen to ask anything. We knew that the Web portion was people already lined up."
5. Bonnee L. Breese: "Hi, Mr. President. Thank you so very much for having me, a public school teacher from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, here to be with you. THE PRESIDENT: What's your name? Q Bonnee Breese. THE PRESIDENT: Good to see you, Bonnee. Q Thank you. I'm from Overbrook High School. I have to say that, because I know all the children are watching. (Laughter.)"
A supporter of the president's -- "Of course!" she said -- Breese was invited to the meeting through the American Federation of Teachers union. She sits on the executive board of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers, Local 3, she said, and is known in her area for being politically engaged.
The sixth in-person presidential questioner, "Ellie" from Maryland, did not give her surname. The White House did not respond to a request for it, but noted there were roughly 100 people in the audience.
"The audience was composed of approximately 100 people, including teachers, nurses, small business owners, and community leaders -- and the virtual audience of thousands across the country who have submitted questions online," said White House spokesman Nicholas S. Shapiro. "The White House reached out to a number of community groups and the chamber of commerce and those groups invited their folks to come and participate."

If you heard last Sunday's Last Americans Standing Show, you all know how deeply upset I have been after reading the eight page document release to law enforcement officers in Missouri. I was on the verge of releasing a new article calling on millions of Americans to stand up and demand that this MIAC document be retracted and an apology issued.

The release of a report on militia groups last month by the Missouri Information Analysis Center (MIAC) has led me to take a hard look at the manner in which the Missouri State Highway Patrol oversees the dissemination of law enforcement information by the MIAC. My review of the procedures used by the MIAC in the three years since its inception indicates that the mechanism in place for oversight of reports needs improvement.
Until two weeks ago, the process for release of reports from the MIAC to law enforcement officers around the state required no review by leaders of the Missouri State Highway Patrol or the Department of Public Safety. That process had been unchanged since the MIAC began issuing these reports in June 2007.
For instance, the militia report was created by a MIAC employee, reviewed by the MIAC director, and sent immediately to law enforcement agencies across Missouri. The militia report was never reviewed by me or by the Director of Public Safety, John Britt, at any point prior to its issuance. Had that report been reviewed by either my office or by leaders of the Department of Public Safety, it would never have been released to law enforcement agencies.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Department of Public Safety believe that law enforcement officers require intelligence of the highest quality and that the report in question does not meet that standard. For that reason, I have ordered the MIAC to permanently cease distribution of the militia report. Further, I am creating a new process for oversight of reports drafted by the MIAC that will require leaders of the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Department of Public Safety to review the content of these reports before they are shared with law enforcement. My office will also undertake a review of the origin of the report by MIAC.
In the future, high-level review of these reports prior to issuance will ensure not only that law enforcement officers get better quality intelligence, but also that certain subsets of Missourians will not be singled out inappropriately in these reports for particular associations. The Highway Patrol has already developed a new system for this review, and is working cooperatively with the Department of Public Safety to integrate departmental leadership fully in that process.

During a press conference last week in Kansas City, Mo., DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano called fusion centers the “centerpiece of state, local, federal intelligence-sharing” in the future.
“Let us not forget the reason we are here, the reason we have the Department of Homeland Security and the reason we now have fusion centers, which is a relatively new concept, is because we did not have the capacity as a country to connect the dots on isolated bits of intelligence prior to 9/11,” Napolitano said, according to a DHS transcript.
“That’s why we started this…. Now we know that it’s not just the 9/11-type incidents but many, many other types of incidents that we can benefit from having fusion centers that share information and product and analysis upwards and horizontally.”
But some say the fusion centers are going too far in whom they identify as potential threats to American security.

The second ethics complaint in a week filed against Gov. Sarah Palin alleges a conflict of interest when she wore Arctic Cat logo gear during this year's Tesoro Iron Dog snowmachine race.
Arctic Cat sponsors Palin's husband, Todd, in the world's longest snowmachine race -- Big Lake to Nome to Fairbanks.
Palin, in a press release, said it's all bogus.
"Yes, I wore Arctic Cat snow gear at an outdoor event, because it was cold outside, and by the way, today, I am wearing clothes bearing the names of Alaska artists, and a Glennallen Panthers basketball hoodie," Palin said in the release. "I am a walking billboard for the team's fundraiser! Should I expect to see an ethics charge for wearing these, or the Carhartts I wear to many public events? How much will this blogger's asinine political grandstanding cost all of us in time and money?"

"Why not wave 401K restrictions, penalties and taxes on BOOMER accounts if we use that money to pay down our own debt, save our own mortgages so that we can reposition after these devastating loses we have suffered as a result of Wall Street Crime?"
"Small Business as it is currently defined by our Federal Government is nothing more than a Pig Trough for BIG BUSINESS. (500 Employees is not small.) When will you redefine small business to mean businesses under 100 employees? Please...STOP THE PORK"
"Mr. Reich testifying said Stimulus jobs should not go to WHITE MEN. Your stripping E Verify out of the Stimulus Bill allows illegal aliens to get 300,000 Stimulus Jobs. How do your justify this bigoted reverse racism against White People by you?"

I did our taxes today. IF I look at Social Security and factor in our employers matching share, we put $12,648.00 into the system this year. If we retire at 64, we will have paid into the system for 48 years….start doing some quick math, and you quicly realize that THE YOUNGER GENERATION IS NOT GIVING ME/US ANYTHING I/WE HAVE NOT ALREADY PAID FOR! Stop acting like us BOOMERS are the albatross around the necks of those under 35 who are WANTING THEIR TURN YESTERDAY, who feel they OWE US NOTHING but a kick into the coffin.
Medicaid/Medicare…PAY FORWARD…that was the original intent…we put into the system today, and the money properly invested will be there waiting for us in our Senior Years. Again today I paid my taxes….$1546 given over to Medicare/Medicaid that I have not used yet, will not use for at least another 11 years if God’s willing and the creek don’t rise. Like it or not, WE PAID OUR DUES.
In short, Entitlements ARE OUT OF HAND because the government has mismanaged the funds, the government has WRONGFULLY given benefits to those that do not deserve them (IE, Illegal aliens and 4.5 million anchor babies).
I know, jump up and down and scream and yell about me being a racist, but LOOK AT THE FACTS! Medicare/Medicaid was NEVER INTENDED for those people (US OR THEM), but it has been used for THOSE PEOPLE, and now that the system is on the verge of insolvency, the younger generation wants to make us BOOMERS THOSE PEOPLE, wants to paint us out as the SELFISH ORGERS standing in the way of Obama’s Utopian Tomorrow. What bothers me, is much like the Jews in Hitler’s Germany we Boomers seem to be meekly accepting our fate, wrongfully believing that the government and the youth will WAKE UP TO OUR PLIGHT, will DO RIGHT BY US, will not march us off to internment camps (nursing homes) to die. On Wednesday, Mr. Liddy, 63, the man who was tapped for his behind-the-scenes financial savvy found himself at the center of public wrath of the President Obama, the Congress, and the American public, after revelations that he had approved the payout of lucrative bonuses to the very employees thought to have driven A.I.G. to its knees.
At the Congressional hearing, a horde of cameras and reporters awaited Mr. Liddy, subjecting him to the sort of limelight usually reserved for major felons or celebrities after an unfortunate night out.
But Mr. Liddy, who chatted with protesters as he entered the hearing room to testify before members of a House Financial Services subcommittee, repeatedly tried to make clear that he was not responsible for getting A.I.G. into this mess.
“Six months ago I came out of retirement to help my country,” said Mr. Liddy, 63, a former chief executive at Allstate insurance. “At the government’s request I’ve had the duty and extraordinary challenge of serving as chairman and chief executive officer of American International Group, or A.I.G.”
Mr. Liddy has no doubt questioned that decision on more than one occasion.

The US Navy's Investigation Into USS Hartford ACCIDENT IS MICKEY MOUSE!
Seems The United States Navy's Office of Inspector General sees no reason to investigate the MASSIVE COLLISION between the USS Hartford and the USS New Orleans in the Straight of Hormuz, even though various internet sources are starting to suggest the vessel (nuclear attack sub) is no longer seaworthy, may be nothing more than SCRAP METAL...three collisions now in the past two years (that we know of), the possibility that a Nuclear Attack Sub may now be SCRAP METAL, and the Navy Office of Inspector General sees no reason to investigate? It does not take a rocket scientist to realize the horrific collision of the USS Hartford with the USS New Orleans was/is far more serious than the Navy is letting on. The few available pictures of the USS Hartford fast attack submarine show SERIOUSLY broken welds around the sail. The Conning Tower is canted from stem to stern, suggesting that periscopes are no longer working.
Further, it is my own belief and allegation that such a significant collision has impinged upon the reactor cores cooling capabilities. It is my belief that any attempts to navigate the USS Hartford back to America under its own power endanger the crew of the USS Hartford, as well as the citizens of the world, and our environment.
It is therefore respectfully requested that your office open up a FULLY PUBLIC investigation of how the accident occurred, and just what damage has been done to both vessels. This investigation should include inspection of the entire nuclear propulsion/cooling system to assure the safety of the world population. Said inspection should take place after the nuclear submarine has been returned back to America using the same technology used to transport the USS Cole. (see photograph)
World public health, the safety of the grew, and the protection of our world oceans should supercede whatever Middle East Agenda the USS Hartford was carrying out. Some of them have told administration officials that they would participate only if the government guaranteed that it would not set compensation limits on the firms, according to people briefed on the conversations. The executives also expressed worries about whether disclosure and governance rules could be added retroactively to the program by Congress, these people said.
A spokeswoman for the Treasury declined to comment on the conversations over the weekend.
Administration officials took to the airwaves Sunday to reassure investors that the public would distinguish between companies like A.I.G., which are taking government bailout money, and private investment groups that, under this latest plan, would be helping the government take troubled assets off the books of some of the country’s biggest banks.
“What we’re talking about now are private firms that are kind of doing us a favor, right, coming into this market to help us buy these toxic assets off banks’ balance sheets,” Christina D. Romer, the White House’s chief economist, said in an interview on “Fox News Sunday.”
“I think they understand that the president realizes they’re in a different category,” she said, adding, “They are firms that are being the good guys here.”
Geithner says need private-sector help: report
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said on Sunday that help from the private sector was critical to get toxic assets off banks' balance sheets and help resolve a credit crisis.
"Our judgment is that the best way to get through this is if we can work with the markets," Geithner said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. "We don't want the government to assume all the risk. We want the private sector to work with us."
Geithner is set to reveal details on Monday of a plan to set up public-private investment funds that could buy up to $1 trillion in troubled loans and securities at the heart of the financial crisis.
The Journal said Treasury believes participants in the program shouldn't be subject to executive-pay rules imposed by Congress. The law authorizing a $700-billion bailout and a provision in a $787-billion stimulus package impose tough pay restrictions on firms that receive government funds, including limits on bonuses.

Hartford suffered “visible” damage to the sail and to a bow plane. Campbell could not say if components of the sail such as masts and periscopes are damaged.

USS Hartford and USS New Orleans Arrive In Port Bahrain
From Commander, U.S. 5th Fleet Public Affairs
MANAMA, Bahrain – The U.S. Navy submarine and U.S. amphibious ship that collided in the Strait of Hormuz March 20, arrived in port Bahrain today.
USS Hartford (SSN 768) and USS New Orleans (LPD 18) arrived at Mina Salman pier to further assess and evaluate the damage that resulted from their collision at sea.
The incident remains under investigation.
Overall damage to both ships is being evaluated. The propulsion plant of the submarine was unaffected by this collision. New Orleans suffered a ruptured fuel tank, which resulted in a fuel spill of approximately 25,000 gallons of diesel fuel marine in the Strait of Hormuz.
Aerial searches of the area where the fuel spill occurred were conducted yesterday, and revealed no indication of any remaining fuel on the ocean’s surface.
The U.S. 5th Fleet has been working in coordination with the Navy Oceanographic Office to determine refined search areas, based on currents and winds. Additional searches were flown by U.S. Navy aircraft today and found no remaining fuel on the surface.
The quick dissipation of the fuel is likely due to the type of fuel, and various environmental factors to include air and water temperatures, winds and seas.
Both Hartford and New Orleans are currently on regularly scheduled deployments to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations conducting Maritime Security Operations (MSO).
MSO set the conditions for security and stability in the maritime environment as well as complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations. MSO deny international terrorists use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons, or other material.

USS Hartford, USS New Orleans Collide in Strait of Hormuz
Two U.S. Navy vessels have collided in the Strait of Hormuz, near the Arabian Peninsula. The USS Hartford, a submarine, crashed in the USS New Orleans amphibious ship Friday morning. No serious injuries occurred, but gallons of fuel spilled into the water.

The USS Hartford and the USS New Orleans ran into each other during the early morning hours, at about 1 a.m. local time. Fifteen sailors from the Hartford are reported as “slightly injured.” They have all already returned to duty.
The Navy says the USS Hartford’s nuclear propulsion plant was not damaged. The USS New Orleans, however, suffered a “ruptured fuel tank.” Because of that, 25,000 gallons of diesel fuel marine were spilled.
Military officials say both ships were on their way into port when the collision happened. The submarine was underwater at the time. An investigation is now underway.
Both the USS Hartford and the USS New Orleans are being brought in for evaluation. Their exact locations are not being revealed because of security concerns.
The Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz is located between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula. It is a narrow passageway and is considered one of the most highly trafficked commercial routes for tankers carrying oil.
There is a lot of talk that a major percentage of the foreclosed homes were sold to Illegal Aliens. WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Is it really so smart to forge ahead with the high technology, digitally based electricity distribution and transmission system known as the "Smart Grid"? Tests have shown that a hacker can break into the system, and cybersecurity experts said a massive blackout could result.
If someone hacked into the Smart Grid, experts say it could cause a blackout that stretches across the country.
Until the United States eliminates the Smart Grid's vulnerabilities, some experts said, deployment should proceed slowly.
"I think we are putting the cart before the horse here to get this stuff rolled out very fast," said Ed Skoudis, a co-founder of InGuardians, a network security research and consulting firm.
The Smart Grid will use automated meters, two-way communications and advanced sensors to improve electricity efficiency and reliability. The nation's utilities have embraced the concept and are installing millions of automated meters on homes across the country, the first phase in Smart Grid's deployment. President Obama has championed Smart Grid, and the recent stimulus bill allocated $4.5 billion for the high-tech program.
But cybersecurity experts said some types of meters can be hacked, as can other points in the Smart Grid's communications systems. IOActive, a professional security services firm, determined that an attacker with $500 of equipment and materials and a background in electronics and software engineering could "take command and control of the [advanced meter infrastructure] allowing for the en masse manipulation of service to homes and businesses."

First lady Michelle Obama helped break ground on a new White House organic "kitchen garden" Friday. It will be the first working garden at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. since Eleanor Roosevelt planted a so-called "victory garden" at the height of World War II.
This time, however, the enemy is obesity. The first family is hoping to send a clear message to a fast food-driven nation that often seems to be losing the battle of the bulge.
"We're just hoping that a lot of families look at us and say this is something that they can do and talk to their own kids about and think a little bit critically about the food choices that they make," said Marian Robinson, the president's mother-in-law. The first lady told a group of Washington schoolchildren on hand for the occasion that first daughters Sasha and Malia Obama were usually more willing to try fresh fruits and vegetables because fresh produce generally tastes better.

"I've been able to have my kids eat so many different things that they would have never touched if we had bought it at a store because they either met the farmers that grew it, or they saw how it was grown," she said.

WASHINGTON – Twenty-six elementary schoolchildren wielded shovels, rakes, pitchforks and wheelbarrows to help first lady Michelle Obama break ground for a produce and herb garden on the White House grounds.
Crops to be planted in the coming weeks on the 1,100-square-foot, L-shaped patch near the fountain on the South Lawn include spinach, broccoli, various lettuces, kale and collard greens, assorted herbs and blueberries, blackberries and raspberries.
There will also be a beehive.
"We're going to try to make our own honey here as well," Mrs. Obama told the students from Bancroft Elementary School in Washington. The school has its own community garden.
The students will be brought back to the White House next month to help with the planting, and after that to help harvest and cook some of the produce in the mansion's kitchen. The first harvest is expected by late April.
Mrs. Obama said her family has talked about planting such a garden since they moved to the White House in January.
After she spoke, the students were paired off and handed a gardening tool. The first lady joined, with a tool of her own, and together they began raking and scraping up the grass and topsoil, dumping it into wheelbarrows and depositing the contents in a central location.
"Are we done yet?" Mrs. Obama jokingly said at one point. "I want to plant. Let's harvest something."
When the work was finished, the students sat at three nearby picnic tables and were treated to apples, apple cider and cookies baked in the shape of a shovel.
Some of the produce from the garden will be served in the White House, including to the First Family and at official functions. Some crops also will be donated to Miriam's Kitchen, a soup kitchen near the White House where Mrs. Obama recently helped serve lunch.
Assistant chef Sam Kass said the garden will exist year round, and the crops will change based on the seasons.
He gave no estimate on how much produce the garden would yield, but said, "It should be quite a bit, if we're lucky."

Two U.S. warships are out of action in the Middle East after the attack submarine Hartford and the amphibious transport dock New Orleans collided in calm seas while transiting the Strait of Hormuz into the Persian Gulf in the early morning hours Friday.
Fifteen sailors on Hartford were injured but were able to return to duty, according to Navy officials. No injuries were reported aboard New Orleans.
The exact circumstances of the 1 a.m. incident are unclear. The Hartford was “submerged but near the surface” at the time of the collision, a source told Navy Times.
Both ships are now limping into a local undisclosed port, said Cmdr. Jane Campbell, spokeswoman at 5th Fleet in Bahrain.
“They’re both underway on their own power, and both are in the [Persian] Gulf at this point,” she said. “Hartford is on the surface and will remain on the surface until she’s in port.”
Damage to the wounded ships is being evaluated.
Campbell said initial assessments show two ballast tanks on New Orleans were ruptured, resulting in seawater flooding that required the ship to be stabilized. A fuel tank was also ruptured, causing an estimated spill of 25,000 gallons of marine diesel fuel into the gulf.
“She had flooding in three distinct compartments,” Campbell said. “The flooding is secure, and the ship is making way on her own power.”
Hartford suffered “visible” damage to the sail and to a bow plane. Campbell could not say if components of the sail such as masts and periscopes are damaged as well, but the sub will make a surface transit into port.
“It’s important to point out that Hartford’s [nuclear] powerplant was not affected in this at all,” she said. “We’ll be doing a full incident investigation report as well as a JAGMAN investigation.”
This is the third recent collision involving a U.S. submarine in the Strait of Hormuz or the Persian Gulf.
On Jan., 8, 2007, the attack submarine Newport News and the Japanese oil tanker Mogamigawa collided in the Strait of Hormuz, a busy strategic chokepoint that runs between Iran and Oman. Both ships were headed south and out of the gulf at night when the submerged submarine was overtaken by the faster-moving tanker sailing on the same route.
The movement of the large tanker caused the smaller submarine to be drawn into the ship’s surface wake by the intermingling pressure areas created by their hull washes — a phenomenon known in physics as the “Venturi effect.”
In a previous incident, on the night of Sept. 25, 2005, the attack submarine Philadelphia, while traveling on the surface, collided with a Turkish cargo ship off the coast of Bahrain. No one was injured in the collision.
Both Philadelphia and Newport News underwent repairs in Bahrain before returning to homeport.
Hartford and New Orleans are members of the Boxer Expeditionary Strike Group. Another ship from the group, the dock landing ship Comstock, was in the area at the time of the collision. Boxer remains in the Gulf of Aden on counterpiracy patrol. It and most of the other strike group departed San Diego Jan. 8.

A nuclear submarine was damaged in a collision with another U.S. Navy vessel off the coast of Iran early Friday, leaving 15 U.S. sailors injured and 25,000 gallons of fuel spilling into the Strait of Hormuz.
The USS Hartford, a nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine, was fully submerged Friday when it collided with the transport ship the USS New Orleans, according to a Navy official in the 5th Fleet. Seas were calm but visibility was low as the incident occurred around 1:00 a.m. local time.
No official reason has been given for the accident but a Defense Department official told FOX News that "it appears the two vessels were not in communication before they collided."

Joe Boren, longtime Chairman and CEO of AIG Environmental, and John O'Brien, President of the Company, have both resigned. On January 5, AIG Commercial Insurance issued a statement that Russ Johnston has been named President and CEO of AIG Environmental, and that Kim Hanna is now Executive VP and COO of the Company.
Additionally, in the aftermath of AIG's statement on the management changes, the Bermuda-based insurer Ironshore, Inc. announced on January 6 that Joe Boren and John O'Brien have joined a newly established Environmental Insurance division of Ironshore in New York City, with Boren as CEO and O'Brien as President.
AIG senior reinsurance executive Charles Dangelo has left the insurer to join a company run by its former CEO Maurice "Hank" Greenberg.
Dangelo joins the growing number of executives who have left American International Group Inc. since the insurer was first bailed out by the U.S. government last September.
He has been named chief executive for Starr Indemnity & Liability Co., chief executive of Starr Excess Lines Insurance and director and chairman of Starr Insurance and Reinsurance, all subsidiaries of Starr International Co.
Greenberg said in a statement on the appointment that Dangelo would help Starr International to develop its property/casualty business.
Rates for property-casualty coverage are rising after several years of declines, spelling opportunity for well-capitalized companies in the sector. Insurers' and reinsurers' ability to write new business is dictated by how much capital they can afford reserve for future claims.
AIG said it had no comment on Dangelo's departure.
Greenberg has been ramping up his operations since last year, hiring more staff and entering a joint venture between C.V. Starr and Bermuda insurer Ironshore Inc, called Iron-Starr Excess Agency Ltd. Ironshore has recruited several executives from AIG.

Greenberg questions whether Fed overpaid for toxic AIG securities

(Reuters)—Maurice “Hank” Greenberg, former American International Group boss, has questioned whether a Federal Reserve Bank of New York fund, charged with taking on some of the troubled insurer’s toxic holdings, paid the right price for some packaged debt securities.
Mr. Greenberg, a top private shareholder of the insurer, wrote a letter to AIG CEO Edward Liddy in which he said he is interested in knowing more about a sale of $39.3 billion of assets to the fund, announced by the company on Monday.
In the transaction, the fund bought securities held by the insurer’s counterparties. Mr. Greenberg refers in the letter to reports the CDOs were purchased by the fund at face value, and notes the securities had likely been marked down by the counterparties. He added that AIG had marked the CDOs down to about 50%of face value.
“It certainly seems it was very good for the counterparties,” wrote Mr. Greenberg in the letter.
The fund, Maiden Lane II, was created to hold mortgage liabilities from an AIG securities lending portfolio that caused huge losses to the troubled insurer, the company said in a press release on Monday.
The New York Fed extended a loan to Maiden Lane II to enable the purchase of the securities for $19.8 billion.
Maiden Lane LLC was an entity established to take on the toxic assets of Bear Stearns when it was purchased by JP Morgan. Bernanke hired Blackrock to oversee the pool. During his Senate Finance Committee confirmation hearing on January 21, Timothy Geithner said he said that he thought Maiden Lane's disclosure was "adequate."
On December 29, the central bank's Board of Governors wrote a report to Congress saying that it didn't expect “any net loss to the Federal Reserve or taxpayers” from the Bear Stearns holdings.
Feb. 4 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. taxpayers may be stuck with losses on $30 billion of Bear Stearns Cos. assets owned by the Federal Reserve even though the central bank has said otherwise, according to Robert A. Eisenbeis, Cumberland Associates Inc.’s chief monetary economist.
“There is no prospect for a profit on the assets,” Eisenbeis wrote in a report yesterday. “Losses are mounting.”
The CHART OF THE DAY illustrates the extent of the losses since June, when the Fed began providing data on the holdings’ value. The biggest declines were recorded after quarterly mark- to-market adjustments.
Last week’s total was $4.22 billion, as shown in the chart. JPMorgan Chase & Co. is responsible for the first $1.15 billion under terms of an agreement completed in June, when the company took over Bear Stearns. The Fed picks up the rest.

But Geithner's involvement in several ultimately ill-fated efforts to buttress the American financial system is the very reason some Wall Street CEO's — a number of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of piquing the man who regulates them — question whether he's up to the challenge.
"We have only two things to say about Tim Geithner, who we do not know: AIG and Lehman Brothers," said Christopher Whalen of Institutional Risk Analytics. "Throw in the Bear Stearns/Maiden Lane fiasco for good measure," he said, referring to the site of the New York Federal Reserve, where many rescue discussions took place.
"All of these 'rescues' are a disaster for the taxpayer, for the financial markets and also for the Federal Reserve System as an organization. Geithner, in our view, deserves retirement, not promotion."

NEW YORK (CNN) -- The ex-CEO of the battered insurance and financial services company AIG said Wednesday the bonus plan for executives at his old firm was slipshod in recent years, with employees frequently leaving after receiving retention bonuses.
Former AIG CEO Maurice Greenberg says employees got retention bonuses and could still leave the company.
"You get a retention bonus and there was no handcuffs on that," said former CEO Maurice "Hank" Greenberg. "You get a retention bonus and you can leave the next day. There was no commitment, somebody saying, 'You have to stay.' And many people left. They took the bonus, said thank you and left."
Greenberg was ousted from the company in 2005, after more than 30 years as its chief, in the middle of a New York state investigation into its accounting. But he remains the largest single shareholder in AIG, which has been kept alive after massive losses from complicated financial instruments tied to real estate, and he filed a securities fraud lawsuit against the company earlier this month.
A year ago, he launched a campaign to replace all AIG board members, who he said had done a poor job. In his interview with CNN, Greenberg said directors gave themselves a significant pay raise after he left the company.
"It makes me feel terrible," he said. "This was the biggest, greatest insurance company in history."

NEW YORK - Maurice R. "Hank" Greenberg took the Fifth Amendment "dozens of times" when he was questioned yesterday about possibly illegal transactions between the giant insurance firm he headed for nearly 40 years and a unit of Warren E. Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc., sources told Newsday.
Greenberg, 79, who stepped down last month as chief executive officer of the world's largest insurer, American International Group Inc., invoked his right against self-incrimination to all questions except his name during an approximately 45-minute session with state and federal regulators, the sources said.
The session took place at New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer's Broadway offices. Regulators from the New York State Insurance Department and federal prosecutors also questioned Greenberg.
Brad Maione, a spokesman for Spitzer, declined to comment. Robert Morvillo, one of Greenberg's lawyers, also declined to comment.

"AIG is in crisis," Greenberg's letter said.
An AIG spokesman, Chris Winans, said the company received the letter on Monday, and had forwarded it to members of the board. The board said Monday evening that it saw no need to postpone the shareholder meeting.
Greenberg's letter follows a lawsuit filed last week by Starr International, a company that Greenberg controls, against AIG and its chief executive, Martin Sullivan, as well as Steven Bensinger, who on Thursday announced he would step aside as chief financial officer to assume another position at AIG
The suit, filed in New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan, claims that the insurer fraudulently misrepresented its exposure to credit default swaps, and seeks to recover at least $300 million in damages.
Greenberg, who parted ways with AIG in 2005 amid an accounting scandal, is chairman of C.V. Starr and Starr International, which were once affiliated with AIG, and are still the insurer's largest shareholders.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner told CNN Thursday that his department, concerned that language about bonuses would not hold up to a court challenge, asked Sen. Chris Dodd to include an executive pay provision in the stimulus bill. The loophole allowed bailed-out insurance giant American International Group to pay out $165 million in bonuses.
In an interview with CNN's Ali Velshi, Geithner said the Treasury Department was concerned the government would face lawsuits if contracts were breached for the bonuses.

Janet Napolitano, 51, is President Obama's new Homeland UnSecurity Secretary. She spoke with SPIEGEL about illegal immigration, the continued threat of terrorism and the changing tone in Washington.
SPIEGEL: Madame Secretary, in your first testimony to the US Congress as Homeland Security Secretary you never mentioned the word "terrorism." Does Islamist terrorism suddenly no longer pose a threat to your country?
Napolitano: Of course it does. I presume there is always a threat from terrorism. In my speech, although I did not use the word "terrorism," I referred to "man-caused" disasters. That is perhaps only a nuance, but it demonstrates that we want to move away from the politics of fear toward a policy of being prepared for all risks that can occur. SPIEGEL: This sounds quite different from what we heard from the Bush administration. How will the new anti-terror policy differ from the previous one?
Napolitano: Our policies will be guided by authoritative information. We also have assets at our disposal now that we did not have prior to 9/11. For example, we are much better able to keep track of travellers coming into the US than we were before. (Shaking head...Illegal Aliens Janet, how are you doing on your job of tracking them? Our approach will be not so much focused on protocol but on what steps each of us needs to accomplish to make our countries more secure. (Tell us Janet, what steps have you taken to SECURE our Southern Border with Mexico? Napolitano: In some ways, the problem in Europe is greater than in the United States. But the questions are the same. How do you identify a youth who is susceptible to becoming radicalized? How do you work with that youth, his family and community to give them alternatives to radicalization? SPIEGEL: Should European visitors be prepared to submit even more personal data in the future?
Napolitano: Right now, our focus is on ESTA, as it is.
SPIEGEL: As one of his first official acts in office, President Obama took steps toward closing the prison at Guantanamo Bay. The German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier signaled that Germany would be prepared to accept some detainees. In your view, how many should Germany take?
Napolitano: Right now, we are participating in a group that is reviewing detainees' files case by case. Once that review is completed, the experts will make recommendations to me and ultimately to the president on what should be done with the detainees. It is of course a very great help if other countries have the willingness to take some of the detainees.
SPIEGEL: As governor of Arizona, you counted on new surveillance technologies to secure the border with Mexico. What sort of technology could you use in the fight against terrorism? PSSST....Speigel, that technology DOES NOT WORK!
Napolitano: The violence perpetrated by drug cartels along the Mexican border has truly reached a different quality. This is partly fueled by guns that are purchased in the US and then transported south across the border. We scan license plates to help us determine which vehicles we must stop and search. Napolitano: What is happening in Mexico now is a huge battle for the control of large geographic parts of the country between the federal government and these cartels. I am not a learned man...least ways, not in the traditional pedigreed sense that Mr. Geithner and President Obama are. I can though grab onto a piece of string and start pulling on it to see where it leads. I've spent much of last night pulling on the AIG Bonus Scandal string, and it seems clear that AIG, Maurice "Hank" Greenberg, and Starr International lay at the epi center of EVERYTHING that has crashed our economy, EVERYTHING that is the $180 Billion Dollar bailout. We know that ELEVEN key AIG employees that are no longer with the company got huge bonus money. The first question that Congress should be asking Mr. Liddy...who are those employees by name, how much did they each get, and where (or who) are they working now.
Being a betting man, I am going to guess that the answer to the work question is directly or indirectly those AIG employees are working for ne Maurice "Hank" Greensberg, or one of his (or his family's) holdings.
Second question that Congress should be asking...just how many of AIG's shares does Maurice "Hank" Greensberg own and/or control. Follow that one up with the question, how many of AIG's assets are being privately sold to Maurice "Hank Greensberg (or his various holdings) at bargain basement prices.
AIG filing allows "going private"
American International Group, Inc. filed an amendment today with the SEC that may allow a "going private" transaction and allows former AIG chairman Maurice Greenberg to protect his shares. AIG filed Schedule 13D that allows CV Starr, who has retained Perella Weinberg Partners LP, to advise "Reporting Persons" on a myriad of financial options. Besides the "going private" transaction other options include "acquisitions of assets from" AIG, loans, further investments in AIG, seeking board of directors, exploring a "merger, proxy solicitation, tender offer, exchange offer or otherwise", and considering strategic plan items.
The filing further states that CV Starr may engage in discussions or cooperate with management, the board of directors and other AIG shareholders, and or other relevant third parties.
The filing also allows Reporting Persons to sell or transfer common shares, enter into "public or private transactions" and use privately negotiated derivative transactions, and stock options to hedge the market risk of their stock positions.
These actions are subject to appropriate laws including state insurance regulatory laws.
The entities listed as signing the form include, Maurice R. Greenberg, Edward E. Matthews, Starr International Company, C.V. Starr & CO. Inc., Universal Foundation, Inc., The Maurice R. and Corinne P. Greenberg Family Foundation, Inc., Maurice R. and Corinne P. Greenberg Joint Tenancy Company, LLC, and C.V. Starr & Co., Inc. Trust.
It is further suggested, that the FED, SEC and the FBI starting taking a serious look at the incestuous web that is Maurice "Hank" Greensberg and his associated who are through various means wresting back control of AIG, and gaining most of its assets through various means and maneuverings. Keep in mind here, that Mr. Greenberg was the CEO of AIG for some 40 years. Keep in mind that even after he was FORCED OUT, he controlled a major portion of the company. Now we are supposed to find it just convenient that he has started a NEW VENTURE offering the same services as AIG, registering it in Bermuda for tax purposes, but racing to establish a AIG twin presense throughout the world. Where is Congress, Geither, even Obama in asking why it is that ALMOST ALL KEY AIG employees are suddenly working for Mr. Greensberg's new business venture in various LEADING CAPACITIES.

On March 15, 2005, AIG's board forced Greenberg to resign from his post as Chairman and CEO under the shadow of criticism from Eliot Spitzer, attorney general of the state of New York. On May 26, 2005, as part of a series of actions against leaders of large corporations, Spitzer filed a complaint against Greenberg, AIG, and Howard I. Smith (ex-CFO of AIG) alleging fraudulent business practice, securities fraud, common law fraud, and other violations of insurance and securities laws. Greenberg's public statements show that he found the Spitzer investigation to be very troubling. He maintained his innocence throughout the investigation, and alluded to the possibility that Eliot Spitzer might be conducting a high-profile witch-hunt in the interests of furthering his political ambitions. (In hind sight, did Greensberg carry out his OWN WITCH HUNT ON Elliot Spitzer?)
