Widening Journey BOYCOTT to Include ALL Genesco BRANDS!

Just got off the phone with one Claire S. McGill who is Genesco Corporation's Media Contact. First, she promised to mail out their company Press Release to me immediately, and it is extremely light on content and substance considering teh severity of the situation. More importantly, she FLAT OUT REFUSED to answer a straight forward question that I put to her:

"Are your cash registers used at stores such as Journey PRE-PROGRAMMED before being shipped to the stores?" I asked this question three times, and three times she said she would not answer, had NO COMMENT. Seems a fairly straight forward question that goes to the HEART of the reciept that was printed out with a RACIAL SLUR! You see, it has been alleged that the Racial Slur was one of several choices pre-programmed into the machine. If that statement is true, simply terminating an employee stupid enough to select the racial slur to identify the customer is not really the issue.

IN BREAKING NEWS UPDATE...This story is being picked up Nationally by ABC!

Journeys store gave receipt to a Missouri man that read "dumb N-word."

It is therefore suggested that the Boycott of JOURNEYS be expanded to include ALL Genesco Brands:

Journey's Inadequate Corporate Statement:
CORPORATE STATEMENT

"While we are continuing to investigate this incident, it now appears that an employee in one of our stores entered highly inappropriate statements in a form used to process a merchandise return. Needless to say, such an act was not authorized by Journeys, and will not be tolerated. This employee has been terminated.

At Journeys, we pride ourselves on valuing and respecting every customer. We are shocked and sickened that a former associate could be responsible for an act so out of keeping with our culture and our values. We profoundly regret this incident."

I have sent the following letter to Ms. McCall and any other Genesco email address I can find. Please feel free to cut and paste and forward to others you feel might be in a position to DO SOMETHING about this outrage.

Dear Ms. McCall:

What happened at your Overland Park, Kansas Journey's Store, Store #1166, on October 17, 2008 is inexcusable. One of your employees printed the words, "DUMB N***ER" on his return receipt, when a young black man returned a pair of shoes. It's so hurtful and outrageous, that I can't print the actual word there, but you KNOW what was on that receipt. Please take a look at this KMBC.TV news video, for more information:

http://www.kmbc.com/video/17768384/index.html

This is unacceptable. This young man, Keith Slater, and his family, deserve a formal apology from Mr. Robert Dennis, Genesco's CEO, since Genesco is the parent company of Journeys, as well as a formal apology from the President of Journeys. The manager of Store number #1166 and employee number 355 should no longer be employed by Journeys. And if, as the store employees told Mr. Slater, this racial slur was "a generic code in the system," whoever programmed it into the store's computers should also be unemployed.

This is 2008 for crying out loud! This racial slur coming from a nationwide chain store is totally unacceptable to the American public! I'm sure this is NOT good news to your stockholders either, especially in such a volatile economic market.

Please make sure this email reaches Robert Dennis, CEO, as well as the President of Journeys. And please email me and let me know what was done.

Sincerely,

Carolyn Willis, Founder

Ok, for some strange reason, every one is talking about this like it was Journeys or Genescos fault, when in reality it was that employees fault. As a manager, you have no choice but to terminate that employee, but other than that, we have children saying worse in our schools. why boycott the entire company over what one single ignorant being did. I believe that the boycott is just an ignorant way for people to feel as if they are doing something about the situation. If you really wanted to do somethiong about the situation, you would educate your children about the racial issue. Instead of segregating yourselves. . . get more involved in the community. You can go to any school and see that segregation still exists. . . not severe, but people choose to segregate themselves. Our community needs change. what that employee did was wrong, but what you need to see is that the company is doing everything in their power to correct it. its not like they condone his type of behavior. Open your eyes people, boycotting is not the answer.
